It’s amazing how fast babies grow. I feel like I blinked and my baby is now more than 6 months old! Looking back at his newborn photos, I really can not believe how much he has changed in half a year. I know now more than ever how much his newborn photos mean to me. My husband and I both agree that was an investment we are so glad we made. Here are a few tips that I hope will help you when selecting a newborn photographer.
1. Do Your Research: It’s easy to look for photographers in your area by simply performing a Google search. Typing in “newborn photographer” along with your city and state will likely result in several if not pages of options for you to choose from. Although this is a great option, it is sometimes harder to find the information you need quickly without contacting each photographer. You also might miss out on wonderful photographers that are not as active online if this is the only search you perform.
Another great option to find a photographer would be to turn to social media and friends for references. This way, your scope will be more focused.
Once you have a managable list, you may then want to see if they have a website or portfolio so you can view examples of their work. This way you can see if their style fits with what you have envisioned.
2. Request a Date and Price Quote: As early as possible, reach out to the photographers you are interested in booking with for more information. You may want to request a date and a price list first to narrow down your choices. Though you will not know the exact date your baby will be born, you can loosely plan on the time frame for your newborn photos.
Though price is usually a determining factor in most purchases, it should not be your sole reason for deciding on a newborn photographer. The saying “you get what you pay for” definitely holds true with a service like this, and you will want to have photos you are proud to show off. If you get a jump start on your planning, you will most likely be able to save a little over time to pay for your session.
3. Communicate Your Expectations With the Photographer: Did you see photos they posted on their website or blog that you were especially drawn to? Do you have any ideas in mind for your session? If so, communicate these ideas well in advance with the photographer. That will give them time to prepare for your shoot.
Remember to be realistic. Pinterest is full of wonderful ideas for photo sessions, however, these might not be realistic goals of shots for your own session. If you have selected a photographer who has a style you are drawn to, it will be easier for you and your photographer to loosely plan shots that they are comfortable with and that will meet your expectations.
I hope these tips will help you in selecting a newborn photographer. Remember that this precious time is quite fleeting, and you will not want to look back and wish you had documented such a special occasion in your life. We are so thankful we chose to hire a photographer and the images are truly priceless to us! A very special thank you goes to our photographer, Lori with APPEAR Photography for so beautifully capturing these photos and allowing me to share them with you here. Please feel free to leave your comments or questions and I will respond to them as soon as I can.
